700 Penn Wins Historic Preservation Excellence Award
The District of Columbia Historic Preservation Office, in partnership with the DC Preservation League and Daughters of the American Revolution, selected EastBanc, Inc. and Stanton Development as the 2019 State Historic Preservation Officer’s Excellence Award for work at an OvS-designed 700 Penn, a mixed-use redevelopment. The Preservation Awards “honor outstanding preservation projects and exceptional contributions by individuals and organizations in support of historic preservation in the District.”
The site of the former Hine Junior High School, 700 Penn is 669,900 square feet of residential, office, retail space and flexible event space. The redevelopment includes a unique grouping of architecturally distinct buildings that allow the site design and OvS’ designs to respond seamlessly to the context and character of the surrounding neighborhood. Although the design is rooted in the historical context of Capitol Hill, the site includes many innovative sustainable site elements, including stormwater run-off, rain-water harvesting, urban forestry best-practices, and green roofs.
The project incorporates principles of New Urbanism and Transit-Oriented Development and has encouraged a more vibrant, community-focused neighborhood on Capitol Hill.
