Planting at the Trinca Garden

Following an earlier meeting with Rosita Trinca at our offices in Washington, DC, Eric Groft and John Knowlton of Oehme, van Sweden travelled to the Trinca home in Greenwich, Connecticut to supervise the replacement of a Douglas Fir tree that blew down during a late spring storm.

An Update to the Trinca Gardens

On Monday and Tuesday September 27th and 28th, 2010 Oehme, van Sweden hosted client Rosita Trinca in Annapolis, MD and Washington, DC.

Oehme, van Sweden and Associates is pleased to announce that James van Sweden has been selected as the 2010 Design Medal Winner by the American Society of Landsape Architects (ASLA).

Mr. van Sweden was presented with the award at the ASLA President’s Dinner on September 13, 2010 in Washington, DC. The award recognizes an individual landscape architect who has produced a body of exceptional design work at a sustained level for a period of at least ten years.

Additionally, James van Sweden is the focus of an oral history presented by The Cultural Landscape Foundation, the only non-profit American foundation dedicated to increasing the public’s awareness and understanding of the importance and irreplaceable legacy of its cultural landscapes.

The Art of Planting Design

Plants bring joy, inspiration, and beauty into our lives, feeding the soul and connecting us to the natural world.

A Visit to Nantucket

I was recently on Nantucket installing a beautiful hillside garden overlooking Polpis Harbor in Quaise.

OvS Goes Back to School

It’s that time of year again … students all over the country are returning to colleges and universities and school is once again in session.

Revisiting the Fed

August’s stifling heat has some advantages – many plants have been lured by the sun into their full summer exuberance. Oehme, van Sweden staff members spent a recent lunch break basking in the sun ourselves and enjoying lush plantings at the Federal Reserve campus in Washington, DC.

Revisiting an Old Favorite

Harry Truman once said, “A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.” Nowhere is this more true than in the garden, where weather and climactic conditions hold the power to alter carefully planned landscapes in what seems like the blink of an eye.
