Plans to Redesign Pershing Park Announced
Pershing Park features plantings designed by OvS amidst the open urban plaza planned and designed by Modernist landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg. The park, located two blocks from the White House in Washington, DC, is a seminal piece of OvS’ portfolio from the 1980s. Last week the World War I Centennial Commission announced architect Joe Weishaar and sculptor Sabin Howard as winners of the design competition to redesign Pershing Park as a national monument.
OvS Organics
OvS, working with Seibert & Rice, a leading importer of artisanal terra-cotta pots, has designed a line of historically-inspired terra-cotta vessels for the New Jersey-based company’s American Collection. In true OvS style, rather than design a single pot, the firm fashioned a variety of vessels that can be used to choreograph vignettes that fully display the exuberance of the plantings.
Keep Growing: CBG Plant Evaluation Program Announces Green Roof Findings
Five years ago, the OvS-designed green roof at Chicago Botanic Garden’s Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center, began plant evaluation trials on the 300 different taxa of native and adaptive species housed on the twin 8,000-SF roofs. The taxa, planted in four, six, and eight inches of soil, are evaluated on their performance. Factors such as wind speed and direction, temperature, light intensity, and moisture content are measured. Scientists determined by the end of the 2014 trial, 86 percent of the 216 varieties of woody and herbaceous plants installed between 2009 and 2011 had survived conditions on the roof.
