Oehme, van Sweden Receives Canopy Award
OvS attended the Casey Trees Canopy Awards on April 23, where they received the 2015 Award for Design for the Martin Luther King, Junior Memorial.
The award recognizes OvS’ design that specifies over 200 Yoshino cherry trees and American Elms as part of the Memorial’s landscape. Lisa Delplace, Hilary Oat-Judge, and Justin Maglione attended the event held at Union Market’s Dock5 space in Northeast DC. Koji Nnamdi – host of the Kojo Nnamdi show on WAMU’s – hosted the Canopy Awards. He and Marc Buscaino – Executive Director of Casey Trees presented the Award to Lisa Delplace, as the camping-themed award party invoked the summertime feelings of nights under the stars, stories shared in whispers around the campfire, and times spent with friends.
The “campy” Second Annual Canopy Awards – which allowed the OvS team to rekindle connections with old friends and past collaborators – welcomed more than 400 guests in celebration of the contributions of community leaders who dedicated their time and energy to improving and protecting D.C.’s tree canopy.
The integral theme of having fun was also present; the awards were complete with Shake Shack’s hot dogs and ice cream and classic camping must-haves like chili, trail mix, cookies and s’mores – as music from The Sweater Set, The Lawsuits, and Joy Classic spread through the campfire-filled room. If you were unable to attend this event, mark your calendar for next year’s festivities that will take place on Arbor Day Eve – Thursday, April 28, 2016.
