David Lilly Plaza
University of Minnesota
The design for this rooftop hub of campus activity, which connects campus walkways in all directions, reflects the diversity and high quality of the academic community and is deliberately reminiscent of an urban square. The design features a lavish hardscape of stone and brick surfaces, comfortable pedestrian amenities and a dramatic palette of plantings: trees, shrubs, perennials, and lawn. In addition to hardiness (winter temperatures can dip as low as 30 degrees below zero), the plant materials were selected to provide dynamic contrasts through all the seasons. The plaza also was designed for visual relief when viewed from above; occupants of surrounding buildings enjoy striking glimpses of the garden.
