Jutting into Long Island Sound, this one-acre site on the point of Pine Island in Rye, NY is the ultimate shoreline home, situated in the viewshed of the New York skyline. Planted with native species and tough shrubs that withstand brutal winds and driving surf, the gardens surround a house that dates from the 19th-century and is built of the same granite used on early New York City subway stations. Masses of hydrangeas and roses provide color and contrast to the native seaside grasses. Lawn steps lead gracefully to the pool terrace where large slabs of locally quarried granite surround an elliptical swimming pool. The timber-framed cypress arbor offers protection from the sun and wind, and outdoor furniture creates an intimate spot for sitting and sunbathing.
